Neighbour-to-neighbour car-sharing rolls into Canberra!

We've arrived in Canberra! Rent out your car or borrow cars from your neighbours in the nation's capital with our neighbourly car-sharing community.

Shannon Barker

We’ve got exciting news for the nation’s capital: Uber Carshare car sharing has arrived in Canberra!

By making it possible to turn any car into a share car, we’re helping people save money, and creating cleaner, greener, better neighbourhoods.

Each share car takes up to 10 cars off the road, reducing emissions and making better use of the lazy cars in our streets: it’s common sense for the common good.

Our neighbourly car-sharing community has grown to over 2,000 local cars being shared by more than 100,000 members in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Newcastle, and the Gold Coast – and Canberra’s our next stop.

How car-sharing in Canberra helps to reduce car over-population

Car ownership in Canberra is on the rise. The percentage of households owning two or more cars increased between 2011 and 2016[1], while the percentage of households owning one or no cars dropped.

But it’s not all bad news! While the majority of Canberrans drive to work, Canberra has the country’s highest rate of people walking or cycling to work[2]. Canberra’s smaller size and deliberate town planning make it one of the easiest places to get around by public transport or pedal power, and only drive when you really need to. That’s where car-sharing comes in.

Car-sharing in Canberra

Car-sharing was introduced to the ACT three years ago, when corporate schemes GoGet and Popcar launched in central Canberra.

These car-sharing options are a great way to access cars without needing to own one - but their cars are purchased brand new just for the purpose of sharing.

Uber Carshare is different: because our fleet is made up of real people’s cars, it’s making better use of the millions of under-used vehicles we already have sitting in our streets.

Cars are used for only 4% of the time, on average. Uber Carshare makes it simple and safe for car owners to rent their car out during the hours or days they’re not using it.

The ACT Government embraced peer-to-peer car-sharing when, in an Australian first, it created a dedicated class of CTP insurance for personal share vehicles. This makes it safe and affordable for everyday car owners to rent out their cars through Uber Carshare, offsetting the costs of car ownership and reducing waste.

So what’s it like to rent your car out to your neighbours?

Cars are a valuable resource. Make the most of yours by renting it out to your neighbours when you’re not using it yourself.

Kate’s been renting out her Ford Fiesta for four years, and has earned nearly $8,000 – now her car is paying for itself.

“I was paying to have the car on the road with registration and all the other costs, so I thought: ‘If I can cover my costs just by letting other people use it, it’s a no-brainer!’”

By renting your car out when you’re not using it through Uber Carshare’s neighbour-to-neighbour car sharing platform, you can offset the high fixed costs of owning a car.

Borrowing cars just got easier

If you generally ride or take public transport to get around Canberra, you’ll know that there are times when you need a car - maybe to get down to the coast or up to the snow for the weekend, to show visitors around town, or to move house.

Even if you already own a car, it can be really handy to have an extra set of wheels, or to drive something else now and then.

When you join Uber Carshare, you get access to a whole fleet of cars right in your neighbourhood. Because the cars are owned by real people, there’s a huge range to choose from:

  • small cars for your weekend errands
  • convertibles to impress a special someone
