If you live car-free and are thinking of trying car-sharing to borrow a car, you’re probably wondering which service is best for you. Two of the most popular services are GoGet and Flexicar. Both let you book cars by the hour or day and have cars in various locations around Australia. So which is best: GoGet or Flexicar?
We’ve crunched the numbers to help you compare. But when it comes to choosing a car share option it’s not just GoGet vs Flexicar: we’ll also take a look at Australia’s fastest-growing car share community, Car Next Door.
Car Next Door is a neighbour-to-neighbour car-sharing community that lets you borrow cars from real people in your community. It works just like GoGet and Flexicar, except that it’s up to 40% cheaper. And because the cars are owned by real people, the lion’s share of your money stays in your community.
Joining and membership fees
Both GoGet and Flexicar offer a range of plans to suit both occasional and frequent car-sharers. All the plans have a monthly or annual membership fee. The higher the membership fee, the cheaper the hourly and daily rates for borrowing cars.
GoGet also charges joining fees if you’d like to add extra drivers to your plan.
Car Next Door offers two borrowing plans: the free Featherweight plan and the $19/month Heavyweight plan. There are no joining fees for additional drivers: just make sure your friend joins Car Next Door for free and they can share the driving.

The greenest way to access a car
At Car Next Door we think all car-sharing is great! Our mission is to free people and the planet from the ‘one person, one car’ mentality. We’re working to make it easy and affordable for people everywhere to use a car now and then and choose greener and healthier transport options most of the time.
Car-sharing is a great way to achieve that, but not all car-sharing is created equal. GoGet and Flexicar need to purchase brand new cars manufactured just for car-sharing and ship them to streets across the country. On the other hand, Car Next Door makes use of the cars already sitting idle in our streets. Plus we offset the emissions from every kilometre you drive through our partnership with Greenfleet.
Neighbour-to-neighbour car-sharing through Car Next Door is the greenest, most-sustainable way to access a car.
