As peer-to-peer car-sharing increases in popularity, more car-sharing platforms are starting to operate all over the world. One of the largest car-sharing schemes in the US is Turo.
Turo isn’t operating peer-to-peer sharing in Australia, but there is Car Next Door.
What is Turo?
Turo is a peer-to-peer car sharing company that allows real people to share cars. Car owners can rent out their cars to earn money, and borrowers can book cars at a cheaper rate than using a traditional car hire company.
Formerly known as RelayRides, Turo has been operating since 2010 and is now active in cities across the United States, Canada, United Kingdom and Europe.
Meet Car Next Door

Turo vs Car Next Door
The main differences between borrowing cars through Turo and Car Next Door are instant bookings and Instant Keys.
Car Next Door operates on a system of instant bookings, which means that as soon as you book a car on the website or app your booking is confirmed. There’s no need to wait for the Owner to accept your booking request.
Most cars on Car Next Door use our Instant Keys technology, which allows you to get the car keys using a smart lockbox and a code generated through the app. You don’t need to meet the Owner to pick up or return the car. If you book a car that uses Key Handover, you’ll meet the Owner to get the keys, just like Turo.
Want to rent out your car?
Renting out your car is simple. Most Owners spend less than one hour a month managing their cars.
How to rent out your car
- Check that your car is eligible and start a listing
- Fill out your car’s profile
- We’ll give you a call to answer your questions and get your car set up
If you’re eligible for our Instant Keys technology, you don’t need to meed Borrowers to give them the keys. Our secure lockbox holds the keys, and Borrowers generate a one-time use code to open the lockbox to get and return the keys.
Unlike Turo, all bookings on Car Next Door are instant. You don’t manage and accept individual booking requests – just keep your car’s calendar up to date so your car isn’t available for Borrowers at a time you need it yourself.
Borrowers are covered by damage and loss cover during bookings, and we take care of all the payments, bookings, Borrower screening, tolls, fines processing, and marketing. Our friendly support team is on hand to help you and your Borrowers round the clock too.
All you need to do is block out your car when you need it yourself, keep it reasonably clean and well maintained, and check on it regularly.
The average car makes $250-350 a month, with utes and vans earning an average of $350-750 month. If you meet our criteria, we guarantee you’ll earn at least $2,000 in your first year of renting out your car or we’ll pay you the difference.
